Cornwall Architectural Trust Summer Lecture: William Matthews
This year's Summer Lecture speaker was William Matthews who talked to us about his fascinating career including working on the Shard before establishing his own practice. He was then able to explain the work he is carrying out on the new footbridge at Tintagel for English Heritage, having won the competition in conjunction with engineers Ney & Partners.
We then enjoyed a chance to attend the Falmouth University School of Architecture end of Year Show and awards ceremony.
Tate St Ives
We were very lucky to be given a tour of the newly completed Tate St Ives exhibition space as well as the rest of the gallery and some areas not open to the public. We also held our AGM in conjunction with the Cornwall Architectural Trust where Jason Jarvis took over as Chair from Cian Spowart who concludes his two years in the role.
CAT Lecture & Dinner 2018:
National Maritime Museum, Falmouth
Returning once again to the Maritime Museum in Falmouth, this year we were delighted to have architect Jamie Fobert as our guest speaker. Fabulous talk on his various projects including the extension to Tate St Ives.
The event was also a chance to see an exhibition of entries to this year's Inette Austin Smith Work Experience Competition.
Christmas Lunch & Branch Meeting
Knightor Winery, St Austell
We had a fantastic tour of Knightor Winery followed by a tasting session and talk on the wines produced there. Following this we enjoyed a Christmas Lunch in the restaurant with a chance to discuss opportunities for 2019. Good range of Christmas jumpers on display. Many purchases were also made in the winery shop following lunch. It was a very Merry Christmas.
Cornwall Council Design Training
Chy Trevail, Bodmin
The second training session of the year used real life site in Cornwall (a former clay dry) which delegates had to analyse in teams before coming up with a strategy for development. They also had the opportunity to interview four of the Council's statuatory consultees as part of the process: Highways, Ecology, Drainage and Historic Buildings. Finally each team presented their strategy to the group.
Feedback was great, the most positive the Council has had from a design training session.
