Site Visit to New Cornwall Council Offices
A tour of the work in progress at the new offices located on Dunmere Road in Bodmin. The tour was kindly given by PBWC Architects and main contractor BAM.
The tour was attended by approximately 20 architects and was a good opportunity to have a look around this key building form Cornwall Council during construction.
Tour of Fistral Blue Apartments
A great tour by architects LHC and client Bluer Homes to see the fantastic new apartments on Headland Road in Newquay. Following a tour of building, the event concluded with pizza and drinks at the nearby Stable restaurant overlooking Fistral Beach.
The Cornwall Architectural Trust Summer Lecture: David Sheppard
For the 40th anniversary of the Cornwall Architectural Trust and to celebrate the first year of the Architecture course at Falmouth University, we relaunched the CAT Summer Lecture, hosted by Falmouth Unversity. This year we were delighted to have award winning architect David Sheppard give an overview of his most interesting projects. It was attended by almost 80 people and was a great success.
The Exchange, Penryn
The Annual General Meeting for RIBA Cornwall and The Cornwall Architectural Trust. This was followed by a talk on the design and construction of the award winning Exchange builiding at Tremough Campus, Penryn, by Burwell Deakins Architects. We then had a guided tour of the building.
Design Training for Cornwall Council Local Members
County Hall, Truro
Developed as part of our planning liaison meetings with Cornwall Council, this training afternoon was aimed at educating Local Elected Members in design - how to interpret design, sustainability, understanding types of Cornish architecture and why they work. The training opened with a short talk and then broke into workshops.
Now in its third year, and the second time it has been held on Porthminster Beach in St Ives, the Architectural Sandcastle Competition was a great success. This year there were more than 40 teams who entered and approximately 200 people taking part on the beach. This year the event was part of the St Ives September Festival and organised with PBWC Ltd and RIBA South West.
Cornwall Careers Show
Royal Cornwall Showground
This careers fair took place over 2 days with over 3000 students attending.
RIBA Cornwall brought along our Lego sets once again, along with examples of award winning buildings and slide show presentations to encourage the next generation of architects.
CAT Lecture & Dinner 2015:
Headland Hotel, Newquay
This year the Annual Cornwall Architectural Trust Lecture and Dinner returned to the Headland Hotel in Newquay for the second year in a row. This year's guest speaker was Ben Hamilton-Baillie of Hamilton-Baillie Associate who provided a thought provoking and entertaining lecture of urban design and shared streetscapes.
This year's CAT Award was presented to Peter Beacham for his work in preparing the new Pevnsner guide to Cornwall.
Christmas Lunch & Branch Meeting
As we enjoyed our Christmas Lunch so much last year, we decided to return to Mannings Restaurant in Truro for 2015. Following out December branch meeting to discuss ideas for 2016, we enjoyed a fantastic 3 course Christmas Lunch and drank mulled wine. A great end to an action packed year for RIBA Cornwall!
